The Story Behind the Stories

I grew up in a police family — my dad was a detective, and by the time I was a kid obsessing over Jack the Ripper, I already knew I wanted to spend my life around this kind of work.

I used to tell my dad I wanted to join the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. He’d remind me I was Canadian, so that particular door was closed.

Fine — I said I’d be a homicide detective instead. He told me it doesn’t work like that either; you start where everyone starts, and work your way there.

I never took that path because my only interest was the homicide unit. But I never lost the pull toward it either — not just the “what happened” of a case, but the “why.” What makes someone capable of the things they’re capable of. That question is actually what led me to study psychology in university in the first place, even working as a mental health counsellor for many years.

I’ve also always been the person who loves a mystery in general — paranormal stories, UFOs, the stuff that doesn’t have a tidy explanation. I grew up genuinely relating to Tom DeLonge talking about aliens back when almost nobody else was — finally felt like someone got it.

Outside of this, I’m a personal trainer, holistic nutritionist, and hybrid functional fitness athlete — CrossFit, Hyrox, Spartan races. Honestly, it’s the same brain at work either way: I love pushing past a limit, whether that’s in a workout, with a client, or chasing down the thread of a case that doesn’t add up yet.
